Rhythm X- Sad Happy

Most of you are all well aware of my obsession with winter percussion. :] This video is of the front ensemble for one of my favorite WGI groups, Rhythm X. I'm not looking for you all to agree on whether or not you like this group, but what I am looking for is your observance of the extreme emotions that the members of this group display. It takes so much to be a performer in this kind of activity, and without these extreme emotions there just wouldn't be any interest. What kinds of emotions do you see in this video that you could relate to your own practice/performances? Enjoy!

  1. Really cool video Kelsey. Being in winter percussion myself throughout high school, I can easily relate to your obsession with it and with this video. The performers show a tremendous amount emotion which is essential in giving a good winter percussion performance, or any musical performance for that matter.

  2. KELSEYYYYY You definitely showed me this video and I absolutely LOVE IT! I agree that a performance without any emotion is just plain boring. Even if the performer seems to be "too into" it, it's still fun and amusing to watch. I love the guy who gets excited when the "slow" part is over hahaha.

Kelsey, you bring up an extremely valid point; namely, the emotions of the performers in Rhythm X are so intense, so exaggerated. There is no other force, besides this emotion, that could motivate these individuals to put forth such hard work and long hours.

Although I've never been part of a drum corps or marching band, that same level of emotional intensity and satisfaction also drives my involvement with music. Nothing makes me happier, nothing makes me smile wider than hearing a sick saxophone solo or a sweet section soli.

  4. When we talk about "not getting excited" during a performance - I think percussion is one of the instruments that always manages to get the performer really involved! Just the movement of the body that is required creates a lot of excitement, I think. You know, I used to play percussion in middle school! :)

I really enjoyed the music in this video. I love the sound of marimba/vibraphone!
