Happy Birthday!

With everyone sharing pieces with intense emotions, the first song that came to my mind was "Happy Birthday!" Sung at birthdays everywhere (well everywhere to the average, geographically inept American), this song embodies pleasurable emotions.

So here is a version that everyone can enjoy. I would venture to say that it impossible to not start bobbing your head or stomping your foot.

  1. Well done Will! That's what I love about Jazz or any other types of music that involves improvisation. You can do it with ANY song. My jazz band teacher from high school, when he was telling us about improve, he did something to Mary Had a Little Lamb. Sure it was a simple tune, but he made it sound sooo complex. Makes me wish I could play trumpet XD

  2. That's so cool! This is like what we're learning in piano class but in a way that's actually relevant and useful haha. This just goes to show that you don't need a complex score or even any idea of what you're going to play in order to have fun, get some creative satisfaction, and music with others. It makes me want to learn how to improv.

  3. That was amazing. It completely changed the way the song sounded, yet maintained its identity, which reminded me of: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RD8COH-7Bug

  4. Wow sometimes you don't have to write a whole new piece to be creative! I think it's really cool what Marsalis did with an old melody. That is what is cool about Jazz - a lot of music puts on a whole new feeling when it gets subject to jazz musicians!

Can they perform this at my birthday?

  5. Hearing other people improvise makes me really envious. It's a skill that I do not have, and really haven't tried to develop. But I do really appreciate what others can do with some of the most simple songs, like Happy Birthday.
