Fantasia (1940)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TBH2Ix3yHbE

So this is the original Fantasia (much better than Fantasia 2000). What I really like about it (besides the music) is that the images that go along with it are not the interpretation of trained musicians, but of other imaginative people that worked for Disney. It really shows that you don't necessarily have to be "musical" to enjoy classical music and get some creative fulfillment and satisfaction from it. I also love the old-timey recording sound - it adds such a nice touch.

(You'll also notice that my favorite piece is in here).

And yes, this is what I spent my Saturday night doing.

  1. I LOVEEEE THIS VERSION! Here is my childhood...right in that movie...err..video. Walt Disney is a genius, but I agree that you don't have to be "musical" to enjoy classical music. You don't even have to have any training in my opinion. If it sounds nice to you, and you're having fun and what not, that's all you can really ask for.

  2. I would love to have been able play in this group. It's incredible that Walt Disney acknowledged his musicians in the beginning all the way back in 1940!

I love the shadows of the performers at the beginning, which slowly devolve into more abstract images. It's comical to watch the trombonists because sometimes their slide movements are not so slightly off haha. (They need to relearn their slide technique, right Tyler!)

  3. I had this growing up!!!! And I also love the point you are illustrating (that was pun..get it? Ahahaha. Ya.) I think this proves that music affects everyone, with or without training, but in very different ways.
I also thin that the visual interpretation gives music a new dimension.

  4. I used to watch this all the time! I can say with quite a bit of confidence that Disney was what made me love music. I love Fantasia but I also loved all the music in the other Disney movies all the way through recent Alan Menken compositions. The Disney Cooperation has always used music to add to their films and I think many kids have grown to love it through them.

  5. Ah yes Fantasia 1940! Believe it or not - this was my childhood! I loved the Fantasia films and especially this one. I really enjoy the other fantasias, too, though. There is something truly awesome when you combine visual arts with music. It was like Yo-yo Ma's lecture, when he described the English Suites put into garden form. I am always very impressed by these fusions of art forms.
