The Axis of Awesome: 4 Chords

Kelsey's post reminded me of this video. It's essentially along the same lines: many pop songs have the same chord progression.

  1. Good post Will! I seriously find it amazing that so much music can be created based solely on the simplicity of four chords. My older sister has a habit of mixing songs together at random times when she sings, most of the time she does it unknowingly. I think that her problem of confusing pop songs is due to the fact that that specific kind of music is based on simplicity.

  2. All I can say is, Oh My G-A-D!!

Carrying on this wayward song tradition really is very disheartening when strung together and I loved the video satirising rock music. Maybe I'm crazy (probably) - but how is any of this music still popular? It seems rock artists are just living on a prayer that nobody will notice this conspicuous mischief. Great post Will, you're poking right into the eye of the hurricane in rock music, and kudos for that.

P.S. May I recommend you also check out another example of musicians poking fun at accepted standards (this time government regulation)

  3. True, most pop songs have the same chord progression, but does that not mean that we still don't enjoy the music? Millions of people love these songs, because they are good songs. The more complex things get, the less enjoyable they become to the average person. These artists aren't naive. They realize what people enjoy. So what if its only a four chord progression, that doesn't mean it doesn't sound good or isn't a good song.

  4. Hahaha! Yes this video is the best.

I don't think we always realize that the majority of our music is constructed of the same musical chord progressions. It's interesting and also really funny to see the guy switch between all those songs so cleanly!
